Suzhou legislates for Taihu Lake islands for the first time
Suzhou reviewed and enacted Suzhou Taihu Lake Ecological Island Regulation yesterday afternoon, proposing to build Taihu Lake Ecological Island into an ecological demonstration island that is low-carbon, beautiful, prosperous, civilized and harmonious. It is the first time for Suzhou and Jiangsu province to protect the ecosystem of Taihu Lake islands in the form of legislation.
The main part of the Ecological Island is the well-known Xishan Island located in Jinting Town, Wuzhong District. As the nation’s largest island in freshwater lakes, Xishan Island is a key to and an ecological shelter for the sound ecosystem of Taihu Lake; it also supports the major ecological service functions of the Yangtze River Delta core area.
The Regulation stipulates that a total of 27 Taihu Lake islands and water areas in Jinting Town, including Xishan Island, shall be protected. It also specifies the principles that the Taihu Lake Ecological Island shall stick to and proposes to build Taihu Lake Ecological Island into an ecological demonstration island that is low-carbon, beautiful, prosperous, civilized and harmonious.
The implementation of the Regulation will provide legal safeguards for Suzhou to carry out Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization, put into practice the new development philosophy, and construct the modernization characterized by the harmonious coexistence between man and nature.
